Lake Pleasant
Water Project of the Year
What is it?
Phase 1 of the Lake Pleasant Water Treatment Plant uses water from the Central Arizona Projects' Waddell Canal. With an initial capacity of 302,800m3/d, its eventual capacity will be 1.2 million m3/d (320MGD).
Who is responsible?
The DBO contract was undertaken by a joint venture of American Water Services, Black & Veatch and McCarthy.
Why is it shortlisted?
- The water treatment plant is a technical marvel: it has to deal with wide variations in the quality of feedwater, with fluctuating total dissolved solid concentrations. The plant uses an array of advanced technologies to treat the water to meet or surpass regulatory requirements.
- The plant, which is the largest potable water design-build-operate project in North America, was delivered on schedule, within the fixed budget of $290 million.
- With long-term climate change threatening the viability of life in the desert, the Lake Pleasant Water Treatment Plant has thrown a lifeline to the people of Phoenix, AZ.
