Jumeirah Golf Estates
Water Deal of the Year
What is it?
A 220,000m3/d wastewater collection, treatment and reuse project for the up-market Jumeirah Golf Estates development in Dubai.
Who is responsible?
Property developer Nakheel is the client. Palm Water, Macquarie, and Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank are the developers, with the design-build-operate contract awarded to Degrémont and Besix. Mott MacDonald and KEO are the engineering advisors on the $400 million project.
Why is it shortlisted?
- The Jumeirah Golf Estates project brings sustainability to the Emirates: it is the first time that water reuse has been used on such a large scale in Dubai's booming real estate market.
- Besides being a green marvel, it is technically impressive. Stringent requirements for tertiary treatment have been imposed, and the sludge treatment method used is the most sophisticated in the Gulf.
- Once completed, it is expected to be the largest membrane bio-reactor in the world. It is also the largest private wastewater financing to date.
