Beijing Capital
Water Company of the Year
What is it?
Beijing Capital Group is the municipal infrastructure company associated with the City of Beijing. It is quoted on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. The company treats over 7,600,000 m3/d of water in China, serving a population of over 14 million.
What has it done?
Since 2002, Beijing Capital has transformed itself from being a municipal investment vehicle to become the leading domestic water and wastewater company in China. It signed a partnership agreement with Veolia in 2003, but during 2007 it stepped out of the French company's shadow to compete as an innovative and independent project developer.
Why is it shortlisted?
- Beijing Capital has been a driving force behind the expansion of wastewater treatment in the city from 50% in 2003 to more than 80% ahead of this year's Olympic Games. This achievement is unprecedented in a city of this size.
- Beijing Capital's framework agreement with the Hunan province to build 104 wastewater treatment plants on a BOT basis by 2010 shows staggering ambition.
- The pace of China's industrial growth is matched by the urgency of its environmental challenge. Beijing Capital has shown that it is more than equal to this imperative.
