ONEP, Morocco
Public Water Agency of the Year
What is it?
Office National de l'Eau Potable is the strategic water agency and bulk water supplier for Morocco.
What has it done?
ONEP has become one of the best run and most conscientious public water agencies in the Middle East and North Africa region. In 2007 it invested nearly $700 million in domestic water projects. It also led the consortium which took control of the management of Cameroon's water utility, Camerounaise des Eaux.
Why is it shortlisted?
- ONEP justified its reputation as the best run public water agency in Africa by beating Veolia Water to the contract to run Camerounaise des Eaux.
- ONEP has managed its investment programme in an exemplary fashion, winning the respect of development finance institutions around the world.
- The agency has ensured that Morocco has avoided the water crises that have occurred elsewhere in North Africa.
