Sabine Lattemann/Work on desalination discharge
Environmental Contribution of the Year
What is it?
Despite the very rapid growth of the desalination industry, particularly in the Gulf region, very little is known about the impact of concentrate discharges on the marine environment. Through her work with the University of Oldenburg, the World Health Organisation, and the Middle East Desalination Research Centre, Lattemann has established the ground rules for the study of the subject.
Who is involved?
Sabine Lattemann with the support of Professor Thomas Höpner.
Why is it shortlisted?
- In the past, the environment has been something of a blind spot for the desalination industry. Lattemann has addressed this weakness with absolute academic integrity.
- Although Lattemann has yet to provide all the answers, she has established the basis from which the answers will be found.
- As the need for desalination spreads to new markets, the industry finds itself increasingly under the scrutiny of environmentalists. Lattemann's research is essential if we are to find the balance between desalination and nature.
