Chennai Water Desalination Carbon Credit/VFD
Environmental Contribution of the Year
What is it?
An application for 14,000 carbon credits per year arising from re-engineering a 100,000m3/d desalination plant to reduce energy consumption by 10%, using an innovative variable frequency drive.
Who is involved?
Chennai Water Desalination is a joint venture of IVRCL and Befesa. Zeroemissions has worked on the carbon credit application.
Why is it shortlisted?
- Variable frequency drives have never been used before on this scale to reduce the energy consumption of a desalination plant. This represents a new direction in the search for low-energy desalination.
- Although the carbon credits have yet to be certified, the application is likely to inspire other desalination plant suppliers to focus on achieving lower energy consumption.
- The scope for carbon credit, particularly in retrofitting older plants with low-energy systems, is enormous, and could have a real impact on global warming.
