What is it?
A 113,000m3/d SWRO plant including brine concentrator and evaporator to recover pure salt to be used in a 608 tonne per day chlorine plant.
Who is responsible?
A consortium of GE Water, Baran Engineering, and Group Five Ltd. will supply the $220 million plant. Straits Chemicals is the client.
Why is it shortlisted?
- The Port Elizabeth Coega desalination plant is a work of genius, turning the brine waste stream into a valuable raw material for the chlorine manufacturing process, and simultaneously providing water for the plant, as well as 70,000m3/d for the nearby township.
- When completed, it will be the largest desalination plant in Southern Africa.
