Hyflux

What is it?

A Singapore-listed developer, EPC contractor and plant operator.

What has it done?

In 2009, Hyflux successfully closed the financing as the developer and sole private partner on the 500,000m3/d seawater reverse osmosis project at Mactaa in Algeria. It also commissioned the 100,000m3/d Tianjin Dagang plant - China’s largest reverse osmosis facility. Through its subsidiary Hydrochem, Hyflux was also awarded the $95 million contract to supply a 68,200m3/d SWRO plant at the Salalah IWPP in Oman.

What makes it special?

• Closing the $468 million financing package for the Mactaa project was the biggest coup to date for Hyflux’s growing desalination franchise. The company not only added the world’s largest RO plant to its reference list, but delivered a tariff which left its competitors scrambling for their calculators.

• In an increasingly competitive environment, Hyflux has bucked the general trend and increased its market share where others have been shrinking - it has now broken into the top 10 desalination contractors in terms of contracted capacity.

• Although 2009 was the year in which Hyflux really hit the big-time in the MENA desalination market, it continued to deliver the goods on projects back home in Asia - a glowing vindication of the company’s strategic acumen and inspired foresight.
