Frito Lay Reuse Plant, Arizona
What is it?
A potato chip manufacturing facility at Casa Grande in Arizona with a "net zero" environmental footprint. Wastewater from the manufacturing process is reused as rinse and wash water and made available for irrigation. The project also includes a biomass boiler and a solar power system.
Who is responsible?
GE Water, using a Zenon ZeeWeed membrane bio-reactor.
What makes it special?
• The system delivered a 90% reduction in both water and energy usage at the plant.
• The food processing sector has been reluctant to embrace water reuse. This project sets the standard for water sustainability in the industry.
• Casa Grande, south of Phoenix, Arizona, is a fast-growing community in a fragile natural environment. The Frito Lay processing plant demonstrates how economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand.
