Butler Drive WRF, Arizona
What is it?
A 37,850m3/d wastewater treatment plant serving the city of Peoria, AZ. The plant has the potential to be expanded to 49,205m3/d in future.
Who is responsible?
Black & Veatch provided design and construction-phase services for the $135 million facility, which is owned by the City of Peoria. Sundt Construction was the main contractor.
What makes it special?
• The City of Peoria has met the dual challenges of wastewater treatment and water supply to a rapidly growing desert community with one of the US’s largest membrane bio-reactors by capacity.
• The 30,280m3/d of treated effluent currently produced by the plant is reused in aquifer recharge, enabling the City to earn valuable water withdrawal credits.
• The plant’s low-profile external appearance was integral to gaining public acceptance. The facility includes compact structures that are largely below ground.
