Taweelah B Expansion, UAE

What is it? A 315,000m3/d multi-stage flash (MSF) desalination plant, which formed part of a larger independent water and power project (IWPP) incorporating the existing 448,305m3/d Taweelah B power and water complex.

Who is responsible? A consortium of Marubeni, JGC Indonesia, BTU Power and Powertek Berhad developed the project at a total cost of $1.2 billion. EPC contractor Fisia Italimpianti provided the technology.

Why is it shortlisted?

• At a maximum capacity of 80,300m3/d, Taweelah B uses the largest MSF units in the world - each has a heat transfer surface area of 175,000m2.

• A condensate cooler mechanism to recover excess heat was introduced on the MSF units, and reduced steam consumption by 6% and fuel consumption by up to 2% - a forward-thinking increase in energy efficiency.

• The extension makes the Taweelah B site the largest IWPP developed in Abu Dhabi to date, underscoring the success of the emirate's water and power privatisation programme.
