Reliance Jamnagar Refinery, India

What is it? A 96,000m3/d multi-effect distillation (MED) plant, one of a series of three desalination plants serving Reliance, India's largest petroleum refinery.

Who is responsible? IDE Technologies designed, supplied and built the MED units on behalf of Reliance India, bringing the total desalination capacity at the site to 159,000m3/d.

Why is it shortlisted?

• The Jamnagar site is the largest industrial project ever implemented in the Indian corporate sector, and the largest MED facility outside the Gulf. It paves the way for further large-scale collaborations with international desalination companies in this emerging market in the future.

• The four 26,000m3/d MED units are some of the biggest currently in use in the world, and were successfully completed to schedule in 2008.

• The expansion in capacity at the refinery has also provided extra water for the surrounding community, in a particularly arid and dry part of India.
