Kharafi National

What is it? The wholly-owned infrastructure subsidiary of MAK Group, a large Kuwaiti industrial concern.

What has it done? In June 2008, a consortium of Kharafi National, Biwater and Al Qudra Holding reached financial close on a $400 million package of two wastewater treatment plants in Abu Dhabi. The total capacity of the two plants is 380,000m3/d. Kharafi is also awaiting final approval from the Kuwaiti government for a $150 million expansion of the Sulaibiya wastewater treatment and reclamation plant. Construction of Sulaibiya - the largest plant of its type in the world - was completed in 2003 by a consortium of Kharafi National and Ionics. Under the new plans, the total capacity at the site will be expanded by 175,000m3/d to 600,000m3/d.

What makes it special?

• Kharafi National has established itself as the leading regional player in the water and wastewater sectors in the Middle East. The company's long-term commitment to water reclamation projects in the region is unmatched - Kharafi will soon have almost 1,000,000m3/d of wastewater treatment capacity under its belt.

• Kharafi has assembled a formidable team in infrastructure project development that has set its sights on the biggest wastewater treatment contracts and delivered the goods with understated aplomb.

• Kharafi has successfully developed into a company that can pursue contracts alone or in partnership with others. Its ability to provide a gamut of services, as developer, EPC contractor and operator, has made Kharafi a flexible and experienced local partner.
