Abrera WTP, Spain
What is it? A 200,000m3/d plant treating water from the Llobregat River in Barcelona with electrodialysis reversal (EDR) technology. The plant came online in late 2008.
Who is responsible? Construction was by Valoriza Agua, part of Spanish construction giant Sacyr Vallehermoso. GE provided the EDR technology and ATLL was the client.
Why is it shortlisted?
• It is the world's largest electrodialysis reversal desalination facility and one of the biggest ever membrane plants treating river water.
• Despite operating on a river heavily polluted with bromides, the plant beat expectations in terms of reducing THM (trihalomethane) levels in drinking water, exceeding EU standards.
• The project represents a significant advance in inland surface water treatment for potable purposes. An energy consumption value of just 0.6 kWh/m3 was achieved, with a recovery rate of almost 90%.
